After a Year of Freelancing, Here Are My Tips for Beginners

Nearly a year ago, I began working on freelancing platforms. Since then, I’ve undertaken various projects in several fields, mainly in writing articles, creating content, and designing training programs. Although it is still too early to judge the success or failure of this experience, I’ve gained some insights I’d like to share with you. I hope to provide some helpful advice for anyone considering entering the freelancing world.

The Appeal of Freelancing: Freelancing offers a unique sense of independence for those engaged in it. It allows individuals the freedom to choose their fields and the projects they wish to undertake without compulsion or obligation. Moreover, freelancing can generate a good additional income, provided the freelancer masters their craft according to their specialization. On another note, freelancing enables individuals to broaden their knowledge, acquire new skills, and gain valuable experience in various fields.

Challenges of Freelancing: However, freelancing does come with certain challenges that may negatively impact its benefits, such as:

Inconsistent Workload: Freelancing doesn’t follow a steady rhythm. At times, you may have a lot of work, while at other times, you may find yourself with no tasks for extended periods, leading to feelings of emptiness and anxiety.

- Not a Primary Income Source: Freelancing is usually a supplementary or secondary source of income, making it more suitable for those with a primary source of income who are seeking additional earnings.

High Competition: Due to the large number of people offering services on freelancing platforms, competition is fierce, particularly regarding service pricing.

Quality Assessment: Most project owners heavily rely on the cost of the service when selecting a freelancer. They only discover the quality of the service after the project is completed.

Tips for Aspiring Freelancers: Here are some tips for those who wish to embark on a freelancing career:

1. Ensure Your Expertise: Make sure you can deliver high-quality services in the field you’re offering. Don’t let enthusiasm or the desire to win a project push you into a field you don’t master, as this could harm your reputation.

2. Stay Updated: Regularly monitor posted projects and submit proposals you can deliver if selected.

3. Be Honest: Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Be straightforward and clear in your proposals. Overpromising won’t help you achieve your goal; it may harm your reputation instead.

4. Showcase Your Work: Display samples of your previous work on your profile. Most project owners review past work to assess its quality. Don’t hesitate to showcase your accomplishments, as they could help you land projects.

5. Be Patient: Success in freelancing requires perseverance. Keep submitting proposals and following up on new projects. It’s worth noting that I’ve applied for over a hundred projects since I started and only secured about ten. In my view, that’s a reasonable success rate.

6. Take Projects Seriously: If chosen for a project, treat it with utmost seriousness. Create a work plan that allows you to deliver the project on time.

7. Present a Work Plan: Share your plan with the client and obtain their approval. Execute the project in phases, updating the client at each stage and incorporating their feedback.

8. Maintain Relationships: Don’t sever ties with the client after delivering the project. Follow up and ask if they need further adjustments or additions. This approach can leave a positive impression and increase the likelihood of being chosen for future projects.

9. Manage Multiple Projects Wisely: Avoid taking on multiple projects simultaneously unless you’re confident in your ability to handle them. If you do, organize your time and develop a work plan to meet deadlines.

Final Thoughts: To succeed in freelancing, you need dedication and the ability to manage your time effectively. Deliver projects according to a well-defined timeline agreed upon with the client. This approach ensures mutual benefit and satisfaction for both the client and yourself.
